Eastern Washington pragmatism.

The first of two houses for this client, this is a small second home on a ranch that is managed by a third generation orchardist. It is perched on the edge of one of the orchards, at the end of a majestic poplar wind break, with dramatic views to the rolling hills of the Tieton Valley.

The colors of the home come from the fall colors of the surrounding vegetation; poplar, sage and bitterbrush. We tucked the structure into the hillside, making it almost invisible from the orchard, and opening to a large concrete patio with steel pipes mimicking the angles props used in the fall for fruit laden branches.

Growing up in eastern Washington apple country myself, this project was a joy, and I’ve developed a longstanding friendship with the owners.
